Excerpt

“Damn, Selena. You would’ve survived a Russian gulag.”

I’m nonplused. My eyes are now like emerald lasers burning the shit out of his crystal blue ones. Zap.

The curtain opens and Sergei waves his hand. The curtain closes. Sergei’s crystal blue eyes look hard into my emerald ones. I don’t blink.

Sergei sets his jaw. He knows I won’t allow him to save this cluster of a night.

“Alexei is my personal chief of presidential security. He protects me. I assigned him to you for your protection while you are in Russia.”

“What? What?” I ask, dumbfounded. “You spied on me? Alexei is a spy?” Tears fall from my eyes, and I don’t try to stop them. I’m nearly falling forward from my pert perch. I’m more upset by Alexei’s betrayal than I am about this scam by Sergei.

“Alexei?” I whisper as a tear runs down my nose.

Sergei begins to say he’s sorry. I don’t let his lips form the words.

“Excuse me,” I say and rise to my feet. I clutch my etui and turn toward the ladies’ room alcove.

I’m aware the back of my hair is bouncing against my lavender dress as this curvy lady is making hay to the ladies’ haven. My lavender shoes click on the wooden floors. I want to take the shoes off, and my slinky lavender dress, and hurl them both at Sergei Radkov. The damned etui too. And the purple gloves and the alexandrite ring. Damn, I left my gloves.
